An accountability court in the federal capital has released the assets of former Prime Minister and PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif. The decision was made by Accountability Judge Mohammad Bashir, who issued the order for the release of assets that had been seized when Nawaz Sharif was declared a proclaimed offender in the Toshakhana case.
In October 2020, the trial court had initially ordered the seizure of his assets due to his failure to appear before the judge despite several summons. The order to seize the assets was withdrawn after Nawaz Sharif appeared before the court upon his return to Pakistan, ending his self-imposed exile.
Last month, the former prime minister returned to Pakistan after spending four years in the UK, where he had gone to seek medical aid. Despite being convicted and sentenced to prison, Sharif addressed a massive public gathering at Minar-e-Pakistan in Lahore after traveling from Dubai Airport to Islamabad in a private jet. Following the court orders, authorities had seized Nawaz Sharif’s 1650 kanals of agricultural land, vehicles, bank accounts, and other assets.
