NEPRA’s decision follows a hearing on fuel adjustment in electricity prices, specifically addressing the quarterly adjustment from July to September. While the detailed decision is pending, NEPRA officials have confirmed the Rs1.25 per unit increase for power consumers nationwide.

Despite the potential for a negative adjustment, NEPRA officials noted that the increase in electricity bills had already been reflected in consumers’ payments across all DISCOs. Concerns were raised about billing accuracy, with reports of 10 to 12 cases of over-billing identified in each DISCO.

During the hearing, NEPRA officials disclosed a total increase request exceeding Rs22.56 billion. They highlighted a 9.5 percent reduction in electricity purchases by Distribution Companies (DISCOs) between July and September, with DISCOs procuring 38 billion units instead of the anticipated 42 billion.

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) is set to increase the power tariff by Rs1.25 per unit for domestic consumers, compounding the challenges faced by consumers in the wake of recent tariff hikes.

The decision, expected to impose a Rs23 billion burden on consumers, will be officially announced by the federal government soon.
