The night between 14 and 15 Shaban is considered a very sacred night and it is known as “Shab-e-Barat.” The Muslims all over the world observe this night with great enthusiasm. It is also called the “Night of Forgiveness” in Islam and the Muslims seek the forgiveness from Allah for their sins and seek for His Blessings. This year, Shab-e-Barat will be observed on the night between Saturday 20 April and Sunday 21 April.
Shab-e-Barat is celebrated with great enthusiasm in South Asian countries particularly in India and Pakistan. There are different names associated with this night in various countries. In India and Pakistan, this night is known as “Shab-e-Barat” and in Iran, it is known as “Nim Sha’ban.” In Malay speaking countries, Shab-e-Barat is known as “Nisfy Sya’ban” and in Turkey, it is called “Berat Kandili.”
The Muslims distribute sweets and desserts among children, needy and poor people, friends and relatives. In South Asian countries, the Muslims usually distribute a local dessert known as “Halwa” among the people. So, the ritual is observed with great razzle-dazzle.
The Sunni Muslims believe that on this night, Allah (SWT) saved the Prophet Noah A.S from the flood and his ark and the people remained safe from the disastrous flood. The Shia Muslims believe that on this day, their 12th Imam (Muhammad Al-Mahdi) came to the world.
So, this night has great significance for all sects of Muslims.
Shab-e-Barat Fazail
Shab-e-Barat is known as Laila-tul-Bara’at. Since Laila-tul-Bara’at means the Night of Salvation, every Muslim seeks mercy and forgiveness on this night from Allah Almighty. That’s why it is called as “Laila-tul-Bara’at.
It is Shab-e-Barat when the life and death and fortune for the coming year are decided for every man and woman. So, the people offer special prayers in this night to seek forgiveness from Allah Almighty.
In Shab-e-Barat, Allah Almighty accepts the repentance of His creature and showers maximum blessings upon them till Fajr prayer. So, the people look towards Him for freedom from any calamity, disaster or azaab.
Hazrat Ali (R.A) said, “O people, spend the night of 15 Shabaan in prayers and have fasting on the day of 15 Shabaan. On this blessed night, Allah showers His mercy to the people and calls out: “IS THERE ANY WHO SEEKS FORGIVENESS, IS THERE ANY NEEDY WHOM I SHOULD GRANT” till the Fajr time.”
(Ref: Ibn Majah)
Shab-e-Barat has great Fazilat in Islam. One night, our beloved Holy Prophet (PBUH) remained in sajdah for an unusually long time. The Sajdah was so long that Hazrat Ayesha (R.A) became worried about Him (PBUH). When He (PBUH) finished his prayer, he explained about his long Sajdah to Hazrat Ayesha (R. A), and said, “Do you know the importance of tonight? It is the mid-Shabaan night. Allah Almighty accepts “Tauba” of his creature. Allah Almighty blesses the sinners if they seek forgiveness.”
Our beloved Holy Prophet (PBUH) used to pray for the whole night on 15 of Shabaan and had fasting on the day of 15 Shabaan. On this day, our previous year’s deeds are presented before Allah Almighty. He (PBUH) used to pray at 15 Shabaan night and have fast on 15 Shabaan’s day so that when His previous year’s deeds are to be presented, Allah would have mercy. (Remember, He (PBUH) is a beloved Prophet of Allah and is already in His Mercy. But He (PBUH) did this act so that the other Muslims follow it.
There is no particular prayer to offer in this night. However, to seek Salvation from Allah Almighty, you can offer Nafal, Salat-ul-Tasbeeh, recitation of Quran and 5th Kalima Astaghfar to get forgiveness from Allah Almighty.
