PM Shahbaz Sharif Meets US President Joe Biden in New York

On Friday 23 September 2022, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif met US President Joe Biden at the reception of world leaders attending the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

During the meeting, Shahbaz Sharif appreciated the US government’s flood relief efforts, the continuous assistance of the Covid vaccine, and the cooperation between the two countries. The Prime Minister is in the US to attend the United Nations General Assembly where he will address the world today about the devastating floods caused by climate change.

In his speech to the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday, Biden made an impassioned appeal to help Pakistan deal with the disaster and urged the world to stand by the country. “Much of Pakistan is still underwater, and they need help,” the US president said.

The US president also called for action to tackle the climate change crisis and announced a $2.9 billion fund for life-saving humanitarian aid and food security around the world. On the other hand, Pakistan has appealed to the international community for assistance in relief efforts as the country’s economy, already battered by a balance of payments and dwindling foreign exchange reserves, is further strained by flood damage.
