Islamabad High Court acquits Maryam Nawaz in Avenfield Reference

September 29,2022: A two-member bench of the Islamabad High Court has acquitted Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) vice-president Maryam Nawaz’s appeal against the sentence handed down by the accountability court in the Avenfield reference.

The appeal of Maryam Nawaz and Captain retired Safdar against the decision of the accountability court in the Avenfield reference is heard today in the Islamabad High Court.

A division bench consisting of Justice Amir Farooq and Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani heard the case while Sardar Muzaffar appeared in the court on behalf of NAB while Amjad Parvez appeared on behalf of Maryam Nawaz.

It should be noted that the accountability court of Islamabad sentenced Maryam Nawaz to eight years in prison and a fine of two million British pounds in the Avenfield reference in 2018, while her husband Captain Retired Safdar was sentenced to two years in prison.

Former Prime Minister Mian Nawaz Sharif was also sentenced to eleven years in prison and fined 8 million British pounds in the same case, while the court separated the case of Maryam Nawaz and her husband.

In today’s hearing, the court heard both parties and acquitted Maryam Nawaz and Captain retired Safdar. On the occasion of Maryam Nawaz and Captain Safdar appearance in court, strict security arrangements were made.
