The Transport Department has slashed intercity bus fares by up to five percent, offering passengers some relief after the recent fall in diesel prices. Regional transport authorities have been directed to enforce the revised rates immediately.
New Ticket Prices on Key Routes
The reductions vary depending on the route, with cuts ranging between Rs. 50 and Rs. 320:
- Lahore–Sargodha: now Rs. 1,060 (down by Rs. 50)
- Lahore–Islamabad: Rs. 1,950 (down by Rs. 100)
- Lahore–Peshawar: Rs. 120 cheaper
- Lahore–Rahim Yar Khan: Rs. 140 reduction
- Lahore–Hyderabad: Rs. 300 cheaper
- Lahore–Karachi: down by Rs. 320
For daily commuters and long-distance travelers, the cut may not seem huge, but it still marks one of the first tangible benefits passed on to the public after months of rising fuel and transport costs.
Why the Reduction Happened
The move follows the Finance Division’s announcement of a Rs. 12.84 per litre drop in high-speed diesel prices. Petrol prices, however, remain unchanged. Since buses and coaches rely primarily on diesel, transport authorities have been pressed to adjust fares accordingly.
Official Word
Rana Mohsin, Secretary of the Regional Transport Authority Lahore, confirmed that the revised fares reflect the fall in diesel rates and represent an overall 5% decrease in intercity travel costs. The new prices are effective immediately.
Bigger Picture
While the price cuts provide short-term relief, passengers are likely to keep a close watch on whether future fluctuations in fuel prices—either up or down—are consistently reflected in fares. For now, though, travelers heading to major cities like Islamabad and Karachi will save a modest amount on their journeys.
