Pakistan Voices Strong Support for Iran’s Peaceful Nuclear Rights During Historic Visit

In a significant diplomatic development, Pakistan has firmly backed Iran’s right to pursue nuclear energy strictly for peaceful purposes. This declaration came during the first official visit of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to Islamabad.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, speaking at a joint press conference alongside President Pezeshkian, emphasized Pakistan’s solidarity with Tehran amid growing international scrutiny of Iran’s nuclear activities. “Pakistan stands with Iran in its pursuit of peaceful nuclear power,” Shehbaz stated, underscoring Islamabad’s supportive stance despite mounting geopolitical tensions surrounding the issue.

This endorsement gains added weight considering the increasing global friction involving Iran’s nuclear ambitions, especially after recent Israeli conflicts targeting Iranian nuclear facilities. The United States has reportedly conducted strikes on Iranian nuclear sites, heightening regional instability.

On the diplomatic front, Iran has engaged in candid nuclear negotiations with key European powers—France, Germany, and the UK—following a near-deadline set for late August to revive the 2015 nuclear accord. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) views these talks optimistically, suggesting they could lead to the return of onsite inspections, a crucial step in de-escalating tensions.

The 2015 deal, from which the U.S. withdrew in 2018, involves China, Russia, and European nations alongside Iran, balancing sanctions relief with nuclear constraints. A critical deadline looms on October 18, when the deal’s governing UN resolution expires. Unless the “snapback” sanctions mechanism is triggered, which would reinstate UN sanctions targeting Iran’s economy, including its energy and defense sectors, all sanctions will automatically lift—an outcome watched closely by global powers.

Trade and Cooperation Take Center Stage

Beyond nuclear discussions, the visit showcased a commitment to deepening Pakistan-Iran economic ties. Prime Minister Shehbaz announced a $10 billion trade target between the two neighbors, accompanied by several signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) aiming to bolster cooperation.

The PM also addressed regional conflicts, condemning Israel’s attacks on Iran and expressing condolences for those affected. He highlighted Pakistan’s support for Palestine and drew parallels between the plight of Palestinians and Kashmiris under Indian control, calling for global unity to bring peace to Gaza.

Iranian President Pezeshkian expressed warm appreciation for Pakistan’s hospitality, calling the country his “second home.” He praised Pakistan’s backing against Israeli aggression and stressed the importance of Muslim unity.

Reflecting on the bilateral relationship, Pezeshkian pointed to shared cultural and religious bonds as the foundation of close ties. He affirmed Tehran’s commitment to enhancing political, economic, and cultural exchanges with Islamabad. Border security cooperation was also cited as a priority, reflecting mutual concerns about stability and safety.

Extensive Agreements Signed to Boost Bilateral Collaboration

During the visit, Pakistan and Iran formalized 12 agreements and MoUs across various sectors. These include cooperation in agriculture (plant protection), border management (joint use of Mirjaveh-Taftan border gate), technology and innovation, tourism, media exchanges, meteorology, maritime safety, firefighting, judicial assistance, and air services.

A notable highlight was the intent to finalize a Free Trade Agreement (FTA), signaling a long-term vision to enhance trade flows and economic integration.

Federal Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan and his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Atabak held high-level talks focusing on accelerating trade, overcoming border obstacles, and fostering trust-based commercial relations.

Minister Jam Kamal emphasized Pakistan’s readiness to deepen economic links via structured platforms like the Joint Economic Commission and sector-specific trade delegations. Both sides agreed to prioritize sectors such as agriculture, livestock, energy, and logistics to maximize bilateral trade potential.

Jam Kamal also highlighted how regional trade blocs like ASEAN have successfully capitalized on intra-regional commerce, suggesting similar strategies for Pakistan and Iran.

Iran’s Minister Atabak welcomed the idea of regular business-to-business (B2B) engagements, proposing dedicated B2B events during official visits and inviting Iranian business groups to Pakistan for comprehensive discussions. He stressed that the primary requirement now is consistent facilitation from both governments to unlock the vast potential of cross-border trade.

Looking Ahead

This visit marks a fresh chapter in Pakistan-Iran relations, with both nations reinforcing their commitment to political solidarity and economic cooperation. Pakistan’s vocal support for Iran’s peaceful nuclear program and the broad array of agreements signed signal a strategic partnership that seeks to navigate complex regional dynamics while fostering mutual growth and stability. The success of this engagement will largely depend on sustained political will and practical steps to streamline trade and security collaboration moving forward.
